
Volkswagen introduced the concept car called “Mission Efficiency,” targeting fresh standards in electric transportation. This near-production EV merges cost-effective mass-manufacturing methods with an extreme focus on lightweight construction and aerodynamic efficiency to boost its capabilities.
The vehicle is positioned as the rightful follow-up to the limited-run VW XL1. By unveiling Mission Efficiency, Volkswagen showcases an EV that proves how economical and progressive zero-emission driving can become, appealing to many potential buyers.
Design and Engineering
Mission Efficiency’s styling adopts a teardrop silhouette, a flattened nose, sealed rear-wheel enclosures and an aerodynamic undercarriage. Above speeds of 80 km/h, these features become evident, cutting energy use by over 30 % relative to typical electric cars and delivering notable savings.
Central to the project is an ultra-slim profile that reduces drag to a minimum. The car incorporates components already employed in the ID. Polo, such as the conventional front-wheel-drive APP290 unit delivering 99 kW and a 54.9 kWh high-voltage battery that offers dependable and efficient energy.
Performance and Capabilities
The model proved its extraordinary performance on a certified 1,278-km expedition from Wolfsburg to Vienna. Throughout the trip, the 54.9 kWh usable-capacity battery required just a single recharge, highlighting the vehicle’s substantial range and efficiency.
The trip resulted in fresh official world records: a real-world energy use of just 6.89 kWh per 100 km and a drag coefficient (cW) of 0.158, establishing a new standard for street-legal vehicles. Measuring almost 4.80 m in length, the coupé provides a stripped-down cabin for four occupants and a surprisingly roomy trunk of 481 L, suitable for everyday needs.
Volkswagen brand board member Thomas Schäfer states: “Mission Efficiency is the ideal way to demonstrate what distinguishes Volkswagen in the electric age: technology for the masses – not just for the few.” Kai Grünitz, board member responsible for Technical Development, also emphasized how the mass-produced parts boost the vehicle’s overall efficiency.

Built for every model using the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive, this powertrain is exceptionally lightweight and efficient, making it the perfect fit for the record-setting car and enabling its notable performance and range.
