Honda to debut 15 hybrids featuring electric AWD - honda debut
The new hybrid system is part of Honda’s effort to recover from losses incurred by its discontinued 0 Series electric car platform, which cost the company billions of dollars.

Honda’s latest-generation hybrid system, called “Honda Hybrid,” will be introduced in 15 models by the end of March 2030, with most of them coming to the U.S. Some of these models will feature electric all-wheel drive.

The new hybrid system is part of Honda’s effort to recover from losses incurred by its discontinued 0 Series electric car platform, which cost the company billions of dollars.

New Hybrid System Details

The Honda Hybrid system is based on the current e:HEV setup, which combines a gas engine, an electric motor, and a generator. The generator funnels electricity back to the high-voltage battery during deceleration, while the electric motor can power the front wheels either on its own or together with the gas engine.

A newly developed electric all-wheel drive (e-AWD) system is also in the works, which will likely borrow from the discontinued 0 Series program. This system uses a rear electric motor that’s not physically connected to the engine and gearbox at the front of the car.

Fuel Efficiency and Performance

Honda has made it clear that fuel efficiency and the joy of driving are the two most important characteristics of its new hybrid system. The company claims that its new hybrid system will result in 30% better fuel efficiency compared to current non-hybrid full-size SUVs.

Besides full-size SUVs, Honda is planning smaller, mid-size hybrids, which could include updates to the CR-V and Civic best-sellers. The new hybrid system will be paired with a newly developed V-6 engine and an upgraded lithium-ion battery.

Honda’s bet on hybrids is likely a strategic move to recoup losses from its failed electric car platform. The company lost $9 billion after canning the 0 Series project, and tapping into the rapidly expanding hybrid market could pay dividends.
