Jaguar has revealed the interior of the new Type 01 electric GT, a four-seater that will kick-start the brand’s reinvention as an all-electric luxury marque. The interior takes inspiration from the Type 00 concept and features a large ‘central spine’ that runs the length of the cabin.
The spine divides the interior into four sections, each with its own individual seat. The driving position appears to be low-set and the dashboard is notably clear of instrumentation.
One notable feature of the design is the lack of traditional screens, with only a small touchscreen console for heating and infotainment controls rising from the central spine. Jaguar refers to this as “hidden on-demand technology”.
Design and Features
The Type 01 has a low, swooping ceiling that features panoramic glass. The dashboard has a distinct division between the driver and front passenger sections, with ‘strikethrough’ motifs that also appear on the top lip of the bonnet.
The car lacks a traditional rear-view mirror, instead featuring a digital rear-view camera with a screen located at the base of the windscreen. Jaguar cites travertine stone and “the rich textures of artisan textiles” as influences for the cabin.
Select elements, such as the brass-inspired finish of the central spine and top of the doors, feature Jaguar’s leaper logo embossed into them. The cabin’s design is intended to add to the premium feel of the vehicle, making it a style and reliability blend.
The integration of “hidden on-demand technology” into the car’s architecture allows for a clean and minimalist design, with the small touchscreen console being the only visible control interface.
The use of panoramic glass in the ceiling provides a sense of openness and airiness, while the ‘strikethrough’ motifs on the dashboard and bonnet create a sense of continuity between the interior and exterior design. The digital rear-view camera, with its screen located at the base of the windscreen, offers a unique and innovative solution to the traditional rear-view mirror.
Unveiling and Production
The Type 01 will be shown at Monterey Car Week in California this weekend in a new camouflage wrap. Its unveiling is scheduled for 6 October in New York.
Jaguar boss Rawdon Glover called the Type 01 “unmistakable from every angle”, adding that it “has an interior like no other”.
