Aprilia’s latest entry, the SXR GT 175, expands its maxi-scooter lineup in India with a 174.7cc engine borrowed from the sportier SR 175 model. Positioned as a touring-focused alternative, it delivers identical power within a roomier, tech-enhanced chassis designed for comfort and a more commanding road presence.
The SXR GT 175 has a broad front apron, generous proportions, and a more relaxed visual appeal, making it look like a scooter designed for long-distance riding. The signature tripod LED headlamp gives it a distinctive face, while the fresh color options, race-inspired graphics, and new footboard design add a dash of Italian flair.
Design and Features
The biggest change in the SXR GT 175 is the use of 14-inch wheels at both ends, instead of the 12-inch setup used by earlier SXR models. The larger wheels improve stability over uneven surfaces and give the scooter a more confident look.
The SXR GT 175 also features a five-inch full-color TFT instrument display, Bluetooth connectivity, music and call management, and turn-by-turn navigation, all supported by additional handlebar-mounted controls. The updated exhaust end section, complete with integrated heat protection, adds a tidier finishing touch.
Braking duties are handled by a 220mm front disc with single-channel ABS and a rear drum brake. It’s worth noting that ABS protection is limited to the front wheel, rather than both ends, while the SXR GT 125 gets a different instrument display and CBS braking.
Comfort and Practicality
The SXR GT 175 is designed to offer a more spacious riding layout, with a generous seat, a broad footboard, and a more relaxed overall posture. The scooter also features a five-position adjustable rear suspension, which allows riders to tailor the setup to their preferences and load.
There is decent underseat storage room and additional lockable front storage for everyday essentials. However, prospective buyers should not expect to fit a full-face helmet in the underseat storage, as it’s only suitable for a single half-face helmet.
The SXR GT 175 is priced at approximately Rs 1.30 lakh ex-showroom, which is a premium price for a scooter. However, the scooter’s combination of familiar performance, larger wheels, and modern equipment gives it a convincing starting point.
The Aprilia SXR GT 175’s engine develops 13.3PS and 14.14Nm of torque, which is essentially identical to the SR 175. The scooter’s performance is familiar, but the additional bodywork, revised proportions, and touring-oriented ergonomics influence the riding experience, particularly when filtering through traffic or maintaining a steady pace over longer distances.
With sure-footed take-off and a great rolling pull from 30-80kmph, the engine provides a promising foundation. However, a proper assessment of fuel efficiency will require more time in the saddle than a first ride allows, and the scooter’s 14-inch wheels play a significant role in its stability and confidence on the road.
Technology and Usability
Beyond the visual upgrades, the scooter’s electronic suite aims to simplify daily rides. The TFT panel delivers clear graphics, while Bluetooth links the rider’s phone for calls and music without needing to handle the device.
Practical Considerations
Space allocation receives attention, though compromises remain. The under-seat compartment accommodates a half-face helmet and a few small items, while a lockable compartment ahead stores everyday necessities.
