German EV growth boosted by new models and brands

Germany’s electric vehicle market staged a strong recovery in March, with sales surging ahead of a new government incentive program set to reshape buyer demand. According to data from EV Volumes, 100,178 new EVs were registered in March — a 45.5% year-on-year increase and the best monthly total since August 2023. That earlier peak was driven by a pull-forward effect, as subsidies for commercial BEV buyers ended in September 2023.

BEVs lead the charge

Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for the bulk of March’s growth.

Some 70,309 all-electric cars reached customers, a 66% jump compared to the same month last year. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) also rose, climbing 12.8% to 29,869 units. The strong March helped close a solid first quarter. EV sales across the first three months of 2026 hit 234,701 units, up from 175,558 in the same period of 2025 — a 33.7% gain. BEVs alone accounted for 158,875 of those sales, rising 41.8% year on year. PHEV volumes reached 75,826 units, a 19.3% gain.

New incentives could accelerate growth

Retroactive applications are eligible back to 1 January 2026.

The sales momentum followed the announcement of a new EV incentive scheme in January. The online application portal has now opened, offering direct grants for the purchase or lease of new BEVs, PHEVs, and extended-range EVs. The amount available depends on household income and family size. Germany has allocated €3 billion to the program, aiming to subsidize around 800,000 vehicles by the end of 2029. With the application process now live, second-quarter sales could see an additional boost.
